2 Days : 7 Hours of Sleep
I have at best gotten 7 hours of sleep in the past 48 hours. I have been up into the wee hours of the morning working on homework. Then I take a nap, then up for class. I was dragging today, coffe didn't even help. I stood up for the last half of class, to ensure that I didn't fall asleep.
What is going on you ask? Let sum it up for you:
Asynchronous JavaScript & XML
Otherwise known as ajax - it has been giving me a run for my money. Today for the first time I felt like I had a grasp on what is going on. I have been spending a ton of time reading docs, and watching video's trying to fill in the gaps in my understanding. It has been crazy the last 2 days or so...
I guess truly it's not that the issue is ajax, which is challenging to grasp by itself. It's that I'm also working with a ton of other tools and libraries that were unknown to me just a few weeks ago. So trying to build out fully functinal apps has been pushing me mentally and physically.
It is amazing how drained I feel physically at the end of the day. Truthfully I am more tired after being at TIY than I have been while working my 9-5 as a EMT. Learning is hard work, and it never ends. I am excited about what each day holds none the less. I wake up each morning excited about what the day holds, and so thankful to be here at TIY. No matter how hard it gets, nor any challenges that present I am going to make it through this program with flying colors. (I have a feeling that there may be a ton of battle scars before it's over, but I'm going to reach my goal)
More than anything as I have been watching my peers (Not in a creepy way ;) I have discovered a few things. I've been observing how they attack projects, how they talk, how they overcome challenges etc. My biggest take away is that TIY is what you make of it nothing more, or less. There is no mystery or magic, just a ton of stuff to learn, and a limited amount of time to learn it in. No matter how bad the staff want you to suceed our future rests firmly in our own hands.
Each day here in this enviroment is a gift that I cheerish greatly. I'm going to make the absolute most of it that I can, and then I'm going to try to push a bit more. I could still be at home, talking about how one day I'm going to do X.... instead I am here, making my dreams come to life. I don't have the words to articulate how elated I am to be on this journey right now. I love TIY!!!
Yo-MAN I love you!!! :)
We were introduced to a amazing tool called Yeoman (pronounced 'yo-man') It is a time saver and it has made development so much easier! Yes I have a man crush on this tool ;) It used to take me 10-15 minutes to setup up a new project. With Yeoman I only have to type 2 letters into my terminal, from there on Yeoman works it's magic. It sets up every file and folder that I need. Creates a server, my .gitignore file, adds every libary that I use to the project, (and links them all into my index page) sets up Gulp etc...
it does everything! Up to this point we've been manually creating every file and folder from scratch. Having to link everything in by hand. I was so hyped the first time I experienced what Yeoman offered. We're working with some other cool tools, but I'll leave that for another post. I'm only about 60% done with todays home work.
On a random side note: If I had to guess I'd say that it takes me 6-10 hours a day to finish my homework projects.
Until Next Time...
